April, 2004 -
Fourteen Legacy Project students are working with the Society to learn
historical research techniques. Each student will then conduct an in-depth
study of an individual Civil War soldier, to become part of their Legacy
Project, 2004. Society Trustee David Wilson coordinates efforts between
the Society and the LHS scholars. He and Jane Fischer are working
directly with students, instructing them in their research.
Directors of the
Society met with Directors of the National Plastics Center & Museum,
initializing a strategic alliance between the two educational
organizations.
March,
2004 - Leominster Historical Society Directors and key community
leaders met at the National Plastics Center & Museum for a lively strategy
session, mapping out plans for its next five years. Prior to the meeting a
survey was conducted in the community, requesting information regarding
each individual's opinion about the Society, and what we could do to
improve and grow in the future.
February, 2004 -
In a ceremony and reception, the Society welcomed home a collection of 21
Civil War letters written between 15th Mass. Regt. soldier Charles T.
Brown, and his wife Sarah, a school teacher in Leominster. The letters
represent a pivotal acquisition to our Civil War collection, and a welcome
addition to our Revolutionary War correspondence between Leominster's
Stephen Buss and his father John. Both place community people firmly into
the events that shaped our youthful nation. The letters will be
transcribed and scanned, and made available for limited public viewing and
research. The Society seeks contributions from the community to help fund
the letters.
January, 2004 -
Society members continue their combined efforts with the Leominster
Historical Commission as they work together with the Library, LHS Legacy
Project representatives, and community members on "Combing Through
Leominster's History", a book commissioned by the Mayor to bring
Leominster's history up to date. The last history written was Wilder's
"History of Leominster" published in 1850. "Combing" will
look at the development of industry and the subsequent growth that
propelled Leominster onto the national stage of the 20th century. The Leominster
Historical Society website is part of the Interactive State House website. Please visit the
well-rounded resource site at http://www.mass.gov/statehouse.
In
September 2001, the
Historical Society/Beacon of Hope float received First Place in The Johnny Appleseed
Festival Parade with its patriotic tribute and remembrance of the
country's 9-11
tragedy.
